Investments in coastal habitat preservation, restoration and shellfish aquaculture can help increase and protect the long-term economic prosperity of North Carolina’s coastal communities. This will be the topic of a professional, two-day summit organized by the North Carolina Coastal Federation March 22 and 23 in Raleigh, N.C.

North Carolina Sea Grant, in cooperation with Carteret Community College and the North Carolina Shellfish Growers Association, is sponsoring a Shellfish Producer Meeting that will be held at 6 PM on Tuesday, August 25 in Room 305 of the CMAST building in Morehead City. The meeting will provide an overview of USDA Farm Service Agency Programs available to shellfish producers including farm loans, the Noninsured Disaster Assistance Program (NAP), and the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). The meeting will include instructions for completing applications for the NAP program that are due September 1. The meeting will also include updates on research activities and legislation affecting the shellfish industry.

We had a great meeting last Saturday in New Bern, with lots of new faces and interest in the industry. Below are a few of the major topics discussed at the meeting:
- NCSGA will become a member of the East Coast Shellfish Grower’s Association which will strengthen our voice
- Roll-out of the new website, which is still a work-in-progress, but coming along nicely NCShellfish.org
- Presentations by DENR staff on acquiring leases, and an update on the Siting Tool
- An update on Senate Bill 34, “An Act to Provide for Shellfish Cultivation Leases in Areas Containing Submerged Aquatic Vegetation.”
- The NC Oyster Summit is Mar 10–11 in Raleigh – put on by the NC Coastal Federation…hope to see you there!!!
- Chuck Weirich was introduced as Marc Turano’s replacement (NC Sea Grant – Marine Aquaculture Specialist)
The NCADC will be held Feb 27-28 in New Bern. Please plan to attend if you can. We’ll hold the NCSGA annual meeting on Saturday. There’s quite a few things going on with our industry and I personally believe we’re getting ready to actually see some positive things coming from the State level. – Jay Styron

About the Conference
This conference is designed to bring together the general public, current and prospective fish farmers, scientists, and personnel from regulatory agencies to share information and ideas about the development of aquaculture in North Carolina.
